"Help, help!" cried Piglet, "a Heffalump, a Horrible Heffalump!" and he scampered off as hard as he could, still crying out, "Help, help, a Herrible Hoffalump! Hoff, Hoff, a Hellible Horralump! Holl, Holl, a Hoffable Hellerump!" | -- Piglet panics _Winnie-the-Pooh_, p. 62

The Lynching at the Public Landing

It was a summers night, when a thunderstorm was rumbling in the distance, approaching. A man and a woman went to the local public landing to admire the evening. As the lightning grew closer, the couple heard the sounds of trees creaking accompanied by the sound of choked out moans. A flash of lightning revealed to them, the ghastly image of 10-15 black men hanging from the trees in the distance. The couple promptly left in a frenzy.

That is what the couple saw. What they didn't know was that less than a mile away, there is an old plantation mansion. Legend has it that runaway slaves had dug a passageway to the creek, the same creek at the same general location where the couple saw this haunting apparition.

Could it be that these were the spirits of ill-fated runaway slaves, charged to life by the impending storm?
