The Lil' Red Devil |
|
|

|
What is the Lil' Red Devil? It's the name that
we've given to a satyr-like creature that has been spotted on
Virginia's Eastern Shore.
In Greek mythology, satyrs are mythological half-man and half-goat nature entities that roamed the woods and mountains, and were the companions of Pan and Dionysus.
As with many legends, this creature may have been called by many names. For example, it
also goes by such names as Trollic or "Moon Worshipper".
The purpose of
this page is to collect information on the "Lil' Red Devil". If
you have seen this creature or know of anyone who has had such an experience, please
send mail to: spheres at carfaxabbey dot net

Timeline of Reported Sightings |
| 1987 |
Second hand account of a sighting. (See below, message dated
August 6, 1997). |
| May 1992 |
It was a
Tuesday afternoon after high school. Having
time to kill before marching band practice that
night, a friend and myself decided to visit a local
nature trail (in the hopes of scaring some of our
friends later that night). We arrived at the
trail at around 4:30 and and walked approximately 200
yards back into the trail when we saw a creature off
to our right. It was around 2-3 feet tall and
covered with red fur. It gave a shrill laugh at
which point my friend freaked out and started to run
back down the path. The creature chased him for
about 10-20 feet before it turned around, looked at
me, and then ran off into the woods with the same
shrill laugh. -C.M. |

I was driving
down Red Hills Road
(Which is actually Sinickson -SOI)
when I decided to turn around. I backed up into a
little dirt road (on the left leaving red
hills). My truck scraped the road, so I opened
the door to see if I did any damage. I heard a noise
in the bushes; Thinking it was some animal, I got
back in my truck and looked out the back window. I
saw the bushes move and then I saw little
hands. I got scared and froze. The curiosity
got the best of me so I kept looking.. then I saw
it. It came out of the bushes and looked at me
with a big grin on its face. The only way I can
really describe the creature is a 3' or maybe 4'
satyr. He had red hair all over his body and
had the legs of an animal (hooves like a horse or a
goat) so, I did the only logical thing anyone would
do, I put the truck in gear and took off like
crazy. -J.P. |

I was hunting
for the little satyr with my friend and my
wife. We were standing in a clearing near
Atlantic, VA (where the road curves behind coffins
market) when we heard the little creature
"giggling" and running around. We had
brought weapons just in case we did encounter it
again (after seeing it the first time, I kind of went
crazy looking for it). We wanted to kill one so
our friends wouldn't think we were crazy. Well,
I guess it got tired of seeing us standing there
waiting for it, because the creature went up and
slammed the door on my car real hard (I know it was
the creature because my car was parked uphill, so it
took a little effort to make it shut (it's an old
Camaro with HEAVY doors). We got a little
freaked out so we chickened out and left. The morning
after I had scratch marks on my door (three of them
about 4 inches long) this was my little bit of
proof. -J.P. |

My husband and I were parked at Red Hills
when I looked out the passenger window and saw this little creature staring
into the car. As soon as we noticed it, it
turned around and ran into the woods. - J.M. |

I stopped
down a country back road when I saw this little
thing. It looked like a small white dog so I
didn't pay too much attention to it, until I saw it
stand up on two legs and start walking into the
woods. -J.S. |

A radio
broadcast from WROX 96x in Hampton Roads, VA had a
guest on their morning show who had seen a similar
creature. The man first saw the creature when
he was a child and has researched it since. He
said that the Native Americans have seen it as well
and called them "Moon Worshippers". I
would like to contact this man. If you know how
I can get in touch with him please contact me here. |

It was a
warm, damp night around 11:00 in late June when my
friends and I were at Chandler's Crest on
Chincoteague. I was sitting in the back of the
truck with my back to the driver's side window when I
turned my head to the right and saw a figure that was
around three feet tall. It had a
"pudgy" stomach with white fur. Its
legs were very angled and its head was rather pointed
with deep set eyes that seemed dark, and its face
blended in with its fur. It had rather thin
arms with hands that looked as though they had
claws. It stood there for a few seconds, but
when I jumped it scared it away. It turned and
bounded or galloped off on four legs. - B.C.M.

To whom it may concern: I recently met a man in
my neighborhood, a neighbors boyfriend , .... to make a long
story short, myself and the other people present at the time
were speaking of strange things that had happened to us,
mainly ghost stories and the like (that is what a person
usually hears when asked if they have ever had a strange
experience)... except for this one man, he began to tell us
about a time when he was a teenager and he was with two other
friends.
They were out late, hanging out at the end of
some dead end road somewhere in Virginia. He started
explaining about these two little creatures he saw walking
across the road. He said they had brownish hair on them
from what he could see in the dark; they had bare human like
faces and were murmuring to themselves and laughing.
They all saw this but were afraid to say anything for fear of
their parents accusing them of drug use... so he had only
till this day told his girlfriend about this incident.
I of course thought this was odd. I had only heard of UFO and
ghost sightings, but never this.
I had almost forgotten
about it until I stumbled over your page,
and saw the Little Devil article.
Those descriptions
sound eerily like what this man described. I now
believe him just a bit more. I would also like to know
more about this creature...
p.s. The
man I spoke with was around 17 or 18 when he saw these
creatures and he is now, from what I could tell, in his late
20s. This happened somewhere in or near Lynchburg, Va.

Comments: Have
you looked at those cheap drugstore paranormal books, the
kind you find right at the checkout counter? No, this is no
joke. I have come across mention of "the devil's
footprints" in several of these books, though rarely in
what you would consider more well informed and well written
books.
If I recall correctly (its been a while) these
footprints have been seen in more states than just VA. The
story goes that its a single line of cloven prints, usually
left in new fallen snow. It never stops for obstacles, but
will climb straight up the sides of houses, across the thin
covering of snow on ponds, up and down all manner of
impossible things. The prints themselves aren't even as a
usual creature would leave them, but are in a perfect
straight line, one in front of the other, never deviating.
I
have yet to find solid stories about this in better written
books, but thus far, though cheap and abbreviated, those
cheap little books on the paranormal have always told
accurate stories documented elsewhere, I have yet to have
reason to believe this story is any different. A friend of
mine from that state told me the prints might be of those
little buggers, so when I found this site, I figured I would
let you know as well.
